Fort Portal City
The city of Fort Portal, the only Ugandan city named after an English person, was named after Sir Gerald Portal, the British Consul‑General to formalise the British protectorate in Uganda in the late 19th century
The city is also the seat of the Tooro Kingdom, founded early in the 19th century by Omukama Kaboyo after defecting from the Bunyoro-Kitara Kingdom
Location and Elevation
Fort Portal is located in western Uganda, about 296-300km west of Kampala. Fort Portal sits in western Uganda, at the foothills of the Rwenzori Mountains, often called the “mountains of the moon”.
The terrain in the region is hilly, which creates a moderated, stable climatic condition, sustaining abundant vegetation and a refreshing getaway all year round
City Status and Growth
In July 2020, Fort Portal was officially upgraded to a tourism city, to include the nearby parishes and sub-counties of Karago, Ibaale, Karambi, Bukuku, and parts of Busoro
The population statistics reflect constant urbanisation: in 2002, there were about 41,000 people, in the 2014 census, it was more than 54,000, and by 2020, its size is estimated at approximately 60,800 with an average annual growth rate of 2.12%per year
Natural Attractions and Tourist Magnetism
Fort Portal is an entry point to Uganda’s most spectacular natural wonders. Among its striking characteristics is the fact that it was removed from high sense or intelligence.
Crater Lakes: There are over 52 crater lakes on the Kabarole and Bunyangabu districts, with scenic areas as a good hiking area, bird‑watching, canoeing, and other lakeside resorts like the Kyaninga Lodge or the Nyinabulitwa Country Resort, in addition to the Ndali and Kasenda Beach lodge
Rwenzori Mountains: Situated 30 km away, this is a UNESCO World Heritage site with mountainous features of dramatic peaks clad in snow and glaciers, and Afro‑montane biodiversity
Kibale National Park & Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary: Near the City, Kibale offers tracking of primates-especially chimpanzees and guiding through a quantifiably rich forest biodiversity. The nearby Bigodi is a bird-lover’s and nature enthusiast’s paradise.
Semliki National Park & Sempaya Hot Springs: Enjoying Unique Hot Springs and a wide variety of wildlife, these serve well as an unofficial addition to the Fort Portal tourist package
AMabere Ga Nyina Mwiru caves & Nyakasura Waterfalls: Located in the same volcanic crater lakes and volcanic caves carved in the shapes of the breasts of Nyina Mwiru, with amazing geological formations
To this, there are rivers, botanical gardens, and lush tea plantations that complete its image as a paradise for nature lovers
Culture & Heritage
Tooro Kingdom is sitting at the centre of its cultural heritage. Currently, Karuziika Palace, located on Kabarole Hill, is the seat of King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV
Along the cemetery/cemetery road, lie the Karambi royal Tombs, which remember long ago royal members and royal objects
The local myths and traditions are also incorporated in cultural landmarks like the Amabere Caves, which makes each visit culturally rich and interesting
The city also celebrates separately Empango, the coronation anniversary of the Tooro king- an entertaining cultural event annually
Sanitation & City Planning
Fort Portal boasts of being one of the cleanest cities in Uganda, backed by beautification efforts, street painting and tree planting programs that are carried out every year. In 2016, Brussels year at an ambitious goal of becoming a forest city, planting one million trees before 2025
Infrastructure & Connectivity
Access to tarmacked roads allows easy travel within the city and tourism access, including other cities touching on the city, such as Kampala, Kasese, Bundibugyo, Mbarara, and Kamwenge
The Fort Portal-Bundibugyo-Lamia Road was in particular rehabilitated between 2010 and 2014, with funding from the African Development Bank
Education & Healthcare
Fort Portal has major learning institutions
The University of the Mountains of the Moon (MMU), which opened in 2001 and now has an enrollment of more than 2,450 (as of 2022), also has a new campus on the shores of Lake Saaka
Fins Medical University, a privately-owned centre of healthcare training in the middle of the city
Legacy schools such as Kyebambe Girls Secondary School (founded in 1910) and Nyakasura School (founded in 1926, which has unique Scottish kilts uniforms)
The major hospitals in healthcare are Fort Portal Regional Referral Hospital (public), Holy Family Virika Hospital (private) and Kabarole missionary.
Economy and Investment Potential
Agriculture and most notably tea production do very well because of the cool climate, resulting in high-quality, high-grown tea with significant health benefits praised throughout the world
Tourism is also a major economic force-It attracts investors in the hospitality, crafts and services sector. Fort Portal offers favourable conditions that include cheap land and good infrastructure, which is very conducive in terms of investments
Fort Portal is strategically located in the Western region of Uganda, and its importance is evident with the growth in tourism in the 2018/19 season, which brought over 1.5 million international tourists and $1.6 billion in foreign exchange.
Community & Stewardship
Their resident cultural backbone, the Batooro, are a peace-loving people with a reputation for hospitality. Fort Portal is encouraging community tourism like Bigodi swamp walks, as well as local crafts, where the local economy gains its basis on the management of culture
