Kalinzu Forest

Kalinzu Forest is a perfect hub for tourists interested in natural, primates and adventure tourism. Situated in southwest Uganda adjacent to Queen Elizabeth National Park and close to the town of Bushenyi, this beautiful tropical green forest is one of Uganda’s hidden gems but one with much to offer any tourist willing to explore. Due to its fauna and specifically the high number of different plant species, freshly discovered in the region, the richness of birds, butterflies and a number of other mammals and primates make the forest globally famous.

Many people organize to visit Kalinzu Forest because it is well known for harborage of chimpanzees which attracts those visitors who would love to go trekking for the primates. While compared to other primate based reserves such as Kibale forest, travelers who visit this forest will ever find it congested but rather get to have an actual feeling of visiting Uganda’s natural wilderness.

Location and Accessibility of Kalinzu Forest

The Kalinzu Forest is located in Western Uganda, in Bushenyi District about 375 km south west of Uganda’s capital Kampala. The forest is located close to the eastern scarps of Queen Elizabeth National Park in the western extension of the Rift Valley. The park is easily accessible by road with the main accessing point through the Mbarara-Kasese highway. For travelers using Queen Elizabeth National Park as their destination, then it is easier to get to Kalinzu Forest since it is close by, near Kyambura Gorge and the Kazinga Channel.

Those arriving from Kampala, expect to take about 6 hour drive while the nearest large town to the forest reserve is Bushenyi which is 30 minutes’ drive distance. Those who do not have private transport should consider hiring a guide from the local area or else organize transport with other visitors from the neighboring towns or lodges in Queen Elizabeth National Park.

Activities to be undertaken in Kalinzu Forest are many and cut across the spectrum of interest for many people interested in natural features, birds even adventure. The major reason that brings people to the forest though is increased population of chimpanzees that has become a Centre of attention for tourists from various parts of the world.

Chimpanzee Tracking in Kalinzu Forest

Chimpanzee tracking is the major attraction for anyone visiting the Kalinzu Forest. Currently, the forest hosts about 300 chimpanzees of which only about 50 that is visited by the tourists has been habituated. This means the chimpanzees are familiar to human presence which makes it possible to have nice and close interaction without any unpleasant effects to the chimpanzees. This affords tourists an excellent chance to observe the activities, interactions and vocalization of these rather wise primates.

Trekking usually takes a chance at dawn and can take between 2 and 4 hours depending on the place the chimpanzees are on that day. The trek itself is always an adventure as it goes through thick forests, streams crossings and gentle climbs. Finally, company of experienced rangers that accompany you all the time explain various aspects connected with the chimpanzees’ behavior and the environment.

If the chimps are seen, it is encouraged that the visitors follow their activity of moving from one tree to another, eating and grooming for probably an hour. Watching such animals, these human related creatures perform in their natural habitat is quite exhilarating and so enlightening.

Nature Walks and Forest Hikes

Nature lovers will have full opportunity to discover several interesting tracts of the area in company with the numerous forest paths in the Kalinzu Forest.

There are organized nature trails and these trails are good for getting an introduction to the flora of the forest especially the medicinal plants, trees and mushrooms. Some of these plants have been used for instance, for hundreds of years by people of the territory, guides usually narrate interesting and useful things that have been known in their families. You are also likely to see primates such as the colobus monkeys, red tailed monkeys, and blue monkeys, other animals such as duiker and bush pigs.

Birdwatching in Kalinzu forest

Kalinzu Forest is a bird watchers’ delight, with over 370 bird species in the park. Thus, the forest with its large degree of both vertical and horizontal heterogeneity, is home to both the forest specialized avifauna and birds of the wetland and grassland habitats within the vicinity. Some of the most sought after species include; Great blue turaco, Yellow-billed barbet, African emerald cuckoo, White-spotted fluff tail and crested guinea fowl.

Bird watching is perhaps most effective done at dawn or late in the evening, because that is when birds are most active. Stakeholders have provided guides to help out in identifying the different species which makes it even more fulfilling to the novices as well as the more experienced birders.

Wildlife Viewing in Kalinzu Forest

Apart from the primates of the Kalinzu Forest, there are so many other types of wildlife as follows. While sightings of larger mammals like leopards are rare due to their elusive nature, the forest is still home to several interesting animals including; Forest elephants, Bushbucks, Waterbucks, Giant forest hogs. In addition are many types of reptiles, butterflies and insects, which makes the walk more like a parade with new species in the forest.

Kalinzu Forest is a place for tourism and also a critical habitat. It also has an important role in the process of saving the local bio-diversity. The forest is one of the protected reserves in Uganda and is under the management of Uganda’s National Forestry Authority. Because the forest is located near Queen Elizabeth National Park, it has become an important buffer zone for animals as they move between different ecosystems.
