Lake George in Uganda

Lake George, locally known as Lake Dweru, is located at 0°00′N, 30°12′E, with Kazinga channel that connects it to Lake Edward in Queen Elizabeth National Park, Uganda. It is estimated to be about 250 km² and was designated as a Ramsar Site on 4th march 1988. Prince George, a member of the British royal family who would go on to become King George V of the United Kingdom, is the source of the lake’s name.

Henry M. Stanley was the first European to see the lake; he was on an expedition westward along the Katonga River from Lake Victoria in 1875, which would explain why he mistook the lake for a portion of Lake Albert and called it Beatrice Gulf upon his first arrival. He subsequently visited the lake again in 1888 and discovered there were two lakes, which he then named Bisina Lake.

The lake is a home to several bird species as well as wildlife in the national park. Boat cruises are done on the Kazinga channel that connects the two lakes for wildlife viewing.

Nestled in Queen Elizabeth National Park, Lake George is a relaxing place where wildlife, culture and adventure come together. Although Lake George is smaller than its neighbor Lake Edward, it still provides a wonderful home for many species and rich, living communities. Are you interested in birdwatching, exploring new cultures, or enjoying leisurely boat rides?. Lake George is an important stop for anyone exploring Uganda safaris.
