The Valley of Apes Kyambura Gorge: Nestled deep within Uganda’s immense savannah plains lies one of the country’s most amazing wonders, Kyambura Gorge, or more popularly known as the Valley of Apes. The Valley of Apes is usually known to most visitors to the park through the Kyambura Gorge visitor centre, where tour guides and park rangers brief them. In this orientation, visitors get to learn the history of the gorge, the population of chimps, guidelines for trekking and conservation efforts at the gorge. When cooked, trekkers descend to the gorge on steep but beautiful paths. Along the way, expect to enjoy some amazing walks with views of the walls of the gorge as well as the sounds of the migrating birds and monkeys.

Inspectors start a search for chimps within the gorge. Itinerant trackers guide users through the woods following signs like new nests, fruit debris, damaged twigs, and sounds. Trekking with chimps may be an hour or more, depending on where the primates are and what activities are taking place. This anticipation grows with each one’s step, and when he or she is finally met, it’s a reward indeed. Once the chimps have been located, visitors can spend a magical hour watching chimps move around the trees, searching for food or communicating with other chimps.

The magic of the Valley of Apes is the feeling of being part of an exclusive community of health enthusiasts and others. The lesser-frequented chimps in Kyambura Gorge give a more personal and quieter experience as compared to very crowded chimpanzee places like Kibale National Park. The number of visitors is kept low, which contributes to an immersion in nature not touched by humans and to immensely memorable moments of nature connection.

In addition to chimps, there are many other animals in Kyambura Gorge. Within the forest, you often see other primates like the black-and-white colobus monkey, the red-tailed monkey, baboons and vervet monkeys. The wealth of birdlife is also attractive to bird enthusiasts; hornbills, turacos, kingfishers and sunbirds are among those that are common here. The surrounding savannah further adds to the diversity, and travellers will likely spot elephants, buffalo, antelopes and even the incredible tree-climbing lions at Ishasha Sector.

The Valley of Apes is not only a tourist destination; it’s also a site of conservation. In Kyambura Gorge, the chimpanzee community is fairly small and confined to other communities of chimps; therefore, conserving this community is a priority. However, habitat fragmentation and environmental changes have been significant challenges, and hard work is ongoing to protect the gorge and its wildlife through the efforts of dedicated conservation organisations, park authorities and the local community. Tourist income is a key to these conservation programmes.

A very empowering learning experience at Kyambura Gorge is to become aware of conservation and community linkages. Contrary to that, local communities are directly affected by the tourism due to the employment opportunities, programmes for cultural tourism and conservation around the gorge. Guests will be able to visit the community and interact with local people and experience the traditional dances of Uganda, storytelling and craft-making. Uganda’s dry seasons of June – September and December – February are the best months to visit the Valley of Apes. Those months can be easier to hike through the trails and have better conditions for trekking. But all year round, Kyambura Gorge is a beautiful place. The forest is more vibrant and green in the rainy seasons and might create a magical setting for the enjoyment of forest-goers, favourable to lush landscapes.

If tourists are headed to the area while on a Uganda safari, they are expected to experience some level of physical activity. Good hiking shoes, long pants, insect repellent and lots of drinking water are necessary. The hike is tough due to the steep slopes, but fairly doable for most reasonably fit travellers and is definitely worth the effort.
